the artist :: philosophy

I am truly blessed when I see the work that I produce. It’s a great feeling to see the reaction and response of people who are moved by my paintings. This is part of the wonderful experience of an artist. When I see someone's face light up and eyes tear up when they see my work it is an awesome and gratifying feeling that validates what I do. For me, art is like music in that it evokes a mood and even sometimes a physical reaction. It touches a part of the mind and spirit in a way that few other things do. People travel great distances and endure much just to briefly view works of the old masters. It is also a legacy of sorts that the artist leaves behind. How much more will the primitive and ill-proportioned painting by an aspiring young artist be remembered and cherished, over the well-crafted and executed "personal injury claim" or "legal document" of an experienced lawyer? Hopefully, by the time that I die, I will have created a body of work that transcends generations. Whether now, or generations from now, if what I have created on paper or canvas still evokes in just one person an emotion that causes a reaction, like a smile or tear, I’ll know that I did what God gave me to do and I did it well.
